Western Europe

A Peek Into Several European Countries

Not Equal in Marriage

By Jordan Locke

Norway usually takes the title of one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. Outside in the streets this maybe the case but behind the closed door of the home it stops.

Norway is one of 127 countries that does not criminalize marital rape. According to the Secretariat of the Shelter Movement, Norway’s largest shelter organization, one in 10 Norwegian women over the age of 15 has been raped. At least 80 percent of these cases are never brought to official attention, and of those that have, only 10 percent have seen conviction.

When one thinks of a rapist, usually of a stranger popping out of nowhere while most rapes happen at home. Most of these rapes occur in a relationship and thus are never reported or have little evidence when they finally are.

This is not just a female issue rape can affect everyone and can happen to anyone. Norway will never have equality between men and women until it addresses relationship rape.
