A Peek Into Several European Countries

A migrant boat caught on fire at sea while trying to crossing from Africa to Europe. The ship sank half a mile offshore of the Mediterranean Island of Lampedusa. This tragedy caused an outcry in Italy and called urgent action by the international community. Italy’s finest divers were the first at the scene trying to assess the number of casualties. As the divers claim that the lives of over 300 migrants have been lost; a horrifying detail emerged after the EU commissioner asked why one of the coffins was so much larger than the others. Divers found the 288th and 289th corpses to be a mother and a baby. ” The Eritrean woman, who was seven months pregnant, would have given birth in her death throes” the mayor of Lampedusa Giusi Nicolini told reporters. The terrifyingly sad fact was that “the premature male baby was still attached by the umbilical cord when rescue divers pulled their corpses from the wreck“. Authorities say that the child will be buried in the same coffin as its mother, rather than having its own coffin like the other children. A police marshal said ” None of us could believe it. We all began to cry – my mask was full of tears. I had never before lost control in the job, but in front of that newborn baby I lost my cool.” The doctor said that as the child was being born, the mother was dying. Hence the baby was not separated due to the lack of time. The diver that retrieved their bodies said that ” the baby may never have seen light- only the darkness at the bottom of the sea. It was a horrible job.” All of the survivors of this ship wreck are considered to be illegal immigrants and automatically would have criminal charges. Although the Italian government is on track to repeal the offence of illegal immigration and the Italian premier has requested all the victims to be given a state funeral and to be buried in the a cemetery in Sicily.
